CNET Gives Sharetones for Android a 4.5 Star Rating

In a January 21, 2010 posting cNet has heaped praise on the latest Sharetones release for Android phones. Read the review by Jessica Dolcourt below or read the review at cNet.

CNET Editor's Review:

Here's how to take the guesswork out of ringtones. Start with your own music collection on the phone. Sharetones compares your list to its growing database of user-cut ringtones and returns matches. After previewing and picking, Sharetones will extract metadata information about the sample ringtone and rip your own song to match it, including fade-ins and fade-outs. Bottom line: the only person's music you touch is your own.

If that sounds complicated, don't worry. The application's interface is straightforward. You'll see the ringtone matches appear--tap one to preview or save and rate the song. If there aren't any matches in the Sharetones database, you'll see a link to make your own. The integration of the Ringdroid ringtone editor means you can fashion your ringtones from the app and automatically submit it to the Sharetones database for other users. There's also a new search bar in this version, so you can quickly locate specific songs.

Here's what we'd like to see in the future: an in-preview navigation to scroll forward or backward through ringtone options, and a way to tag favorite ringtone matches from a deep results list. While we're heartened to see the editing software included, Sharetones should also consider partnering with a traditional ringtone seller if they want to become a true one-stop shop. While not every user is willing to pay for ringtones made from their own songs, some will, especially those looking to acquire ringtones in bulk.

DJ Nitrogen Receives Patent for Recipe-Based Ringtone Sharing, Establishing a New Model for Ringtone Distribution

San Francisco, CA – DJ Nitrogen, creator of the Sharetones family of ringtone apps, announced today that it has been granted Patent No. 7,610,044 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. "This is our core process that lets users legally share ringtones between their mobile devices and enables providers to unlock users' music with pre-edited ringtones," said DJ Nitrogen CEO Chris Sindoni. "We believe this is the future of the ringtone business."

The patent covers the method of sharing ringtone content independent of the audio content used to generate the ringtone. DJ Nitrogen refers to this as the recipe-sharing model. The "ringtone recipe" is the meta-data that extracts the ringtone from the full audio track, including start and end points, fade in/out and effects. DJ Nitrogen matches music on a user's phone or media device with the ringtone recipes created by other users. These recipes are stored in the DJ Nitrogen cloud. Each recipe is made available to everyone in the DJ Nitrogen ecosystem who owns the source audio, giving users instant access to a huge and growing selection of ringtones for music they love. The platform is fully compliant with copyright laws because users share only the recipe; they never share the source audio content. In the same manner that users share these recipes, providers can deliver professionally pre-edited recipes to their subscribers using the patented DJ Nitrogen process.

DJ Nitrogen leverages the explosive growth in smart-phones and the trend in full track music downloads to these mobile devices. The ringtone recipes are created and shared by users of the Sharetones ringtone editing applications, including Sharetones for the iPhone. The company's new smart-phone apps, starting with Sharetones for Android, complete the ecosystem loop. They give music fans access to a huge catalog of ringtones, including over 95,000 recipes created by Sharetones users. The recipe matching happens in the background, so smart-phone users just preview and select their ringtones. The patent granted today also covers DJ Nitrogen's process for checking if the source audio sought by the shared recipe is not available on the local device and automatically obtaining a licensed copy of that audio. This enables ringtones to be the point of music discovery, encouraging full track purchases from partner music retailers.

San Francisco, CA – DJ Nitrogen, creator of the Sharetones ringtone sharing platform, announces the new Sharetones App for Android. Sharetones lets users to turn songs on their Android phones into ringtones, alarms and notifications. Sharetones is the only Android app that lets users get virtually unlimited ringtones direct from their handsets without needing to edit their own waveforms or pay the high prices from carriers or third party sites.

Sharetones matches the music on an Android phone with user-generated "ringtone recipes" stored in the Sharetones cloud - giving the Android user instant access to a huge and growing selection of ringtones. Sharetones handles the matching in the background, so all the user does is preview and select. During the introductory period, Sharetones gives Android users unlimited ringtones for free.

"We are really excited to be launching Sharetones for the Android platform," says Chris Sindoni, DJ Nitrogen CEO. "So far the feedback has been great. It's a simple concept really - Sharetones are ringtones you share. We match your music with someone else's recipe to give you a ringtone, instantly."

Sharetones for Android is built on the DJ Nitrogen content collaboration platform that lets users legally share their mash-ups and remixes with others who own the same source content. The ringtone "recipes" are created and shared by users of DJ Nitrogen's Sharetones desktop applications or the new Sharetones add-on for the Songbird Media Player. Each of these applications features full audio editing capabilities, resulting in a huge database of custom ringtones.

"Sharetones for Android helps complete the ecosystem loop" says Boris Ratchev, Product VP and leader of the Sharetones for Android development team. "It gives casual music fans access to over 65,000 recipes created by our desktop app users." Serious DJs can still use the Sharetones Windows or Songbird app to send custom ringtone edits to their Android phones.

DJ Nitrogen Impresses at Windows Mobile Incubation Week

DJ Nitrogen was one of five finalist teams competing in Microsoft’s Mobile Incubation Week, a five-day sprint to create and show the best new Windows Mobile applications. The three person DJ Nitrogen team demonstrated an upcoming Windows Mobile version of its Sharetones ringtone application. The WinMobile version lets users turn any songs on their WinMobile device into ringtones, based on DJ Nitrogen's patent-pending "recipe sharing" technology.

While the competition included larger established companies - Networks in Motion (the eventual winner) and Brightkite - the DJ Nitrogen team impressed the judges with its solution to the illegalities of sharing remixes and mash-ups. The WinMobile application demonstrated by VP Product Boris Ratchev and Developer Ilan Caspi merged music on the Windows Mobile phone with "ringtone recipes" made by other DJ Nitrogen users store in the DJ Nitrogen "recipe database cloud" to create legal royalty-free ringtones. "It was a pretty intense week of developing but we're really pleased with the outcome and the Microsoft team was great to work with" said CEO Chris Sindoni. "Windows Mobile is another great platform for our app, expanding our reach." And Ratchev added that "we're starting with ringtones, but our core technology can solve similar sharing problems with video mash-ups, remixes and playlists."

The team says they’ll have the Sharetones Windows Mobile app ready in the Fall joining other DJ Nitrogen 2009 releases. (See the DJ Nitrogen team in action at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63UyO6GjDmU

DJ Nitrogen Announces Sharetones - Unlimited Ringtone Sharing

Download at www.djnitrogen.com/sharetones.html

San Francisco, CA – DJ Nitrogen announces the release of Sharetones, its new desktop application that lets users make and share unlimited ringtones from any songs they own. Sharetones comes in two versions: Sharetones Standard works with all MP3-compatible phones served by the major US carriers, while Sharetones for the iPhone gives iPhone users anywhere in the word the same access to unlimited ringtone sharing for their iPhones - without any hacks or jailbreaking. Both products are powered by DJ Nitrogen's patent-pending technology that lets users legally share their ringtone creations with other users.

Sharetones is the follow-up to DJ Nitrogen's Ringtone Lab series, offering greatly enhanced speed and access to the DJ Nitrogen Ringtone Sharing Library, improved music library controls and a new pricing model that delivers unlimited ringtones.

“We are really excited about the Sharetones launch,” says Chris Sindoni, DJ Nitrogen CEO. "It marks an important step up from the Ringtone Lab and we're sure our users will appreciate that they can now get unlimited ringtones for a fraction of the price of the subscription models offered by the major on-line stores."

Sharetones Standard is free to download and try. Users can select one of two plans: $3.99 per month or $9.99 per year. Each plan gives users unlimited ringtones for any songs they own and unlimited sharing with the DJ Nitrogen ringtone sharing community. There are no hidden fees and users can cancel at any time.

Sharetones for the iPhone is also free to try and activates with a one-time fee of $14.99 for unlimited iPhone ringtones.

Sharetones lets a user easily make ringtones from songs on his/her computer. Users also are able to use ringtones made by others in the Sharetones community with DJ Nitrogen's legal solution to sharing mobile content. Rather than sharing actual song files, Sharetones users share the "ringtone recipe" - the data that defines the ringtone such as start, stop, repeat or fade. A user can browse, share and build upon ringtone recipes created by other members of the DJ Nitrogen/Sharetones community, but only for songs that the user already owns - thus respecting artists' copyrights. This sharing feature gives users access to a wide and growing library of ringtones for the music they love, with multiple ringtone recipes available for the most popular songs. Novices and audiophiles alike can make cool ringtones with Sharetones' easy-to-expert editor, or they can let Sharetones make the ringtones for them.

DJ Nitrogen Launches Public Beta for New Collaborative Ringtone Application
The balance of power has swung from the record labels to consumers

Download at www.djnitrogen.com

San Francisco, CA - DJ Nitrogen, developer of mobile content collaboration platforms, announces the Public Beta release of its collaborative MP3 ringtone editor. It allows users to create ringtones from any MP3 songs on their computers and send them directly to their mobile phones. Plus, users can legally share and collaborate with others in the DJ Nitrogen community, a first in the industry. DJ Nitrogen works with all major U.S. carriers: Verizon Wireless, AT&T/Cingular, T-Mobile, Sprint and Cellular One.

Far from being just another ringtone outlet, DJ Nitrogen marks a major change in control over the music a consumer has purchased. DJ Nitrogen puts users in control and lets them conveniently manage MP3 ringtone creation and selection right on their desktops. Users' choices will no longer be limited to expensive selections available from the record labels or major wireless carriers, nor will they have to wade through numerous third party sites, often with disappointing results or rife with violations of copyright laws.

"We don't see this as just another ringtone service," says Chris Sindoni, DJ Nitrogen CEO. "This changes everything -- it's the new standard for ringtone delivery. DJ Nitrogen provides a premium service at a lower price point, putting users in control of the music they've purchased. It's the first truly collaborative platform."

Ringtone Lab SMS

The small application is easy to download and install -- ringtones are just a few clicks away. DJ Nitrogen lets the user create ringtones and save the "ringtone recipes" for any MP3 format songs on the user's computer. The user can access (and build upon) recipes created by other members of the DJ Nitrogen community, but only for songs that the user owns. As the DJ Nitrogen community grows, users will have access to the widest ringtone library available, with multiple ringtone recipes for the most popular songs.

A new user's first ringtone is always free. During the Public Beta the first user to create a ringtone from any particular published MP3 gets that ringtone for free also. Beyond these free opportunities, users can select from three pricing models: Individual ringtones can be purchased for $1.50 each or by one of two monthly plans: The Value Plan is $3.99 per month for the first five ringtones, $0.99 each for every ringtone after the first five. The Ultimate DJ Plan is $9.99 per month for the first 15 ringtones, $0.59 each for every ringtone after the first 15. Billing is handled through the carriers and shows up on the user's monthly statement, so no additional credit card information is needed.

Ringtones fall under the compulsory license provision of the U.S. copyright law allowing a user to make a ringtone for him/herself, but only if that user already owns the music from which the ringtone is extracted. DJ Nitrogen gives users this power without having to upload their MP3s to third-party sites or pay up front for editing software. Members of the DJ Nitrogen community never have access to each other's audio files, only to the ringtone recipes.
